Donald Paul Young was born in Detroit, and was a graduate of Lawrence Institute of Technology, now Lawrence Technological University.

He enlisted in the United States Air Corps at 17, and was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe and North Africa. He was said to have continued to practice architecture up to the time of his death.

He died April 26, 2024, at the age of 97.
