Built in 1896, the house at 100 Virginia Park was designed by prominent Detroit architect George D. Mason, in collaboration with Zacharias Rice, for Alexander H. McDonnell. It is one of the earliest surviving residences in the Virginia Park Historic District, which was laid out in 1893 as an upper-middle-class residential enclave.
