Built in 1909, the residence at 49 Virginia Park Street was designed by prominent Detroit architect Louis Kamper for Moe C. Weil, a successful Detroit furniture merchant and co-founder of Weil & Co. The substantial brick residence is located within the Virginia Park Historic District, one of Detroit's notable early-20th-century residential neighborhoods.

Weil & Co. grew into an important Detroit furniture retailer, eventually occupying the building at Michigan Avenue and Wayne Street that is now known as the Gabriel Richard Building. Weil and his wife, Hattie Waldheim Weil, made their home in Virginia Park, where they remained for many years. The family's social and civic connections included Temple Beth El and the Phoenix Club.

Designed by Kamper during the period when Virginia Park was developing into an exclusive residential enclave, the house reflects the substantial scale and architectural quality associated with the neighborhood's early residents. The Virginia Park Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 2, 1982.
