Built in 1908, the John Kaiser House at 60 Virginia Park Street is a substantial brick residence designed for John Kaiser, president of the Kaiser Blair Company, a Detroit men's and youth's clothing retailer. The house is one of the earlier residences in the Virginia Park neighborhood, predating many of the district's larger architect-designed homes of the 1910s and early 1920s.

The house occupies a particularly interesting location at the northeast corner of Woodward Avenue and Virginia Park Street, immediately adjacent to an open space that was once part of the landscaped park at the entrance to the neighborhood. Its prominent position helped make the residence an important visual component of the original Virginia Park streetscape.

The Kaiser House also has a significant connection to the history of Detroit's 1967 uprising. The property stands immediately beside the former site of the Algiers Motel, where three young Black men - Carl Cooper, Auburey Pollard, and Fred Temple - were killed during a confrontation involving Detroit police officers and Michigan National Guardsmen on July 26, 1967. The motel has since been demolished, and the site is now an open space.
