Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Jackson Intermediate School

Andrew Jackson Intermediate, designed by B.C. Wetzel & Co. and completed in 1928, has a palatial design with orange brick and many decorative features. It was dedicated Oct 2, 1931.

It later became Ronald McNair Technical Middle School, focusing on technology. McNair was an African-American astronaut who was killed in the space shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986.

Despite efforts to revitalize it, declining enrollment led to its closure in 2009. After serving briefly as a temporary home for Finney High School, the building was left abandoned in 2012 and heavily ravaged by scrappers soon thereafter.

More on this building coming soon.
